The soundtrack to the musical drama, which features vocal performances by Hugh Jackman, Keala Settle, Zac Efron and Zendaya, is spending a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The soundtrack moved 104,000 equivalent album units in the week ending on January 11, and 70,000 of those were traditional album sales according to Billboard on Sunday (January 14).

It also includes the date of its construction according to the Georgian calendar, the first evidence of its use in Israel, which corresponds with 539 AD. The find was made in the coastal city of Ashdod by a team of researchers from Tel Aviv University and Leipzig University.

 

The ancient city of Ashdod-Yam was in the southern part of the modern city and was one of the most important areas of Israel in the Byzantine period. This is the third season of excavations being held in the region, and footage of the dig has been released by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). 

 

The inscription uncovered on the mosaic reads: 'By the grace of God (or Jesus), this work was done from the foundation under Procopius, our most saintly and most holy bishop, in the month Dios of the 3rd indiction, year 292.'  

 

Dr Leah Di Segni, of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said: 'This is the earliest appearance of the use of the Georgian counted in Israel, many years before it is used in Georgia itself.'

 

 

Ashdod is believed to be home to the largest community of Jews of Georgian origin in the world. According to historical sources, the famous Georgian prince and bishop Peter the Iberian lived in Ashdod-Yam before his death. The Georgian calendar is the ancient calendar of the country Georgia, in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, although remnants remain until this day.

 

Though Georgia now uses the modern Gregorian calendar, the old names for the months are still used. IAA archaeologist Sa'ar Ganor told The Jerusalem Post: 

 

'Testimony to the presence of the actual Georgians in the Land of Israel as far back as the Byzantine period has been found dozens of kilometers from Ashdod, [as well as in] Jerusalem and its surroundings.

 

'But this is the first time that a Georgian church or monastery has been discovered on the Israeli coast. 

'It's interesting that, like today, Ashdod was a focus of attraction for Georgians.' 

 

This public structure, which has only now begun to come to light, is part of an extensive archeological complex in the southern part of modern Ashdod. The IAA is now raising funds to continue excavation of the area.

President Donald Trump continued a multiday crusade against athletes who kneel during the US national anthem by tweeting a video of Jamaican Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt.

"Even Usain Bolt from Jamaica, one of the greatest runners and athletes of all time, showed RESPECT for our National Anthem," Trump wrote Tuesday night.

The 2012 video shows Bolt, a native of Jamaica and an Olympic sprinter who owns eight gold medals, cutting an on-camera interview short to pause for the US national anthem at the Olympic Games in London.

Bolt turns away from the camera and his interviewer, and stands in silence with a Jamaican flag draped around on his back.

Trump has spent nearly a week sounding alarms over athletes who kneel during the national anthem. The gesture is a peaceful protest meant to call attention to racial injustice and police brutality, as noted by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who began kneeling during the anthem in 2016.

The president has sought to frame the demonstration as a protest against the American flag, US troops, and the national anthem. Sports, news, and entertainment figures have pushed back on that assertion.

Others seemed to interpret Trump tweeting a video of Bolt, an athlete of color, as a signal that American athletes of color who kneel during the national anthem should follow his example.

Bolt commented on Kaepernick's demonstration in an interview with ESPN last September: "Everyone has the right to their own opinion. If you feel strongly about something and you want to voice your opinion, I feel it's your right," Bolt said

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria, on Tuesday reminded Nigerians that it was no longer in the business of issuing them visas.

The Embassy’s Charge d’ Affaires, Mr Michel Deleen, told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Lagos that the Embassy had since 2013 swapped itsvisa issuance processes in Nigeria.

Deleen said that the Embassy had since 2013 swapped its visas issuance to Nigerians with the French Consulate General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja.

 “Let me remind Nigerians that since 2013, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria had signed agreements with the French Consulate-General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja.

“What this means is that we have swapped our visa application processes in Nigeria with the French Consulate-General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja.

“Let me remind Nigerians that under these agreements, any Nigerian that wants to visit the Netherlands for business, study or tourism should always process their visa applications through the French Consulate-General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja,” he said.

Deleen also enjoined Nigerians to always apply for visas to the Netherlands, through VFS Global to the French Consulate-General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja.

The Charge d’ Affaires said that it was important for Nigerians and other nationals in Nigeria to know that VFS Global was the internationally-authorised organisaton for receiving all visa applications.

“Let me also advise anyone seeking visas to the Netherlands through the French Consulate-General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja,to always first apply through VFS Global.

“When you first apply to VFS Global for visas to the Netherlands,VFS Global would thereafter send them to the French Consulate-General in Lagos and the Embassy of Belgium in Abuja for processing,’’ he said.

Natural Disaster in Congo, Over 200 People Dead (Details)

The death toll in the latest natural disaster in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed several lives numbering 200.

At least 200 people have been killed in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo after a landslide swept through a fishing village on the banks of Lake Albert in Ituri province, officials said. 

 

Abdallah Pene Mbaka, governor of Ituri province, told AP news agency on Saturday that the estimate is based on missing people and homes affected in the Tora village. 

 

He said 50 houses were destroyed from Wednesday's landslide. 

 

The governor called on the international community for emergency assistance with rescue and recovery efforts. Pacifique Keta, deputy governor of Ituri province, confirmed to Al Jazeera on Friday that at least 60 bodies had been buried so far.

 

Rescue efforts have been affected because of inclement weather at the catastrophe zone. 

 

"There are many people submerged whom we were unable to save," Keta told Reuters news agency on Friday. "The rescue is very complicated because there are mountains everywhere, which makes it very difficult to have access."

 

A UN humanitarian team, aid agencies and provincial delegations are assessing the damage on the ground. 

 

The affected village is located between a mountainous area and Lake Albert. Many parts of West and Central Africa are vulnerable to landslides because land is heavily deforested and communities crowd into steep hillsides.

 

Congo is in the middle of a humanitarian crisis, with about 7.7 million people on the verge of starvation, according to UN food agencies.

 

The disaster comes after more than 400 people were killed by a massive mudslide in Sierra Leone on Monday.

 

In May 2010, a mudslide swept over the eastern Congo village of Kibiriga and killed 19 people. Bodies of 27 others were never recovered.

 

In February 2002, about 50 people were found dead after a wave of mud and rocks hit the eastern town of Uvira, submerging about 150 homes.

The woman identified as Julia Monaco, 26, from Melbourne, was in a shopping centre with pals when the van ploughed through a crowd on Las Ramblas yesterday. She also revealed how she survived the London Bridge attack that took place in June. 

 

She said that she was travelling on the tube when the train was put on lockdown during the London Bridge attack in June. And she said she was in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris just days later when a knifeman attacked a police officer in the square outside the famous landmark.

 

Julia was lucky to escape unharmed after finding herself caught up in terror attacks in three different  countries in as many months during her trip around Europe.

 

But she told an Aussie radio host her experience hasn’t stopped her wanted to see the world.

 

She told 3AW: “I don’t feel like I want to go home.

“I feel like I want to stay here and not let them – whoever they may be – win.

“I’m going to see what I came here to see.”

David Johnston, the Governor General of Canada on Thursday admitted breaking royal protocol by touching the arm of Queen Elizabeth during an engagement in London, though he said the gesture was motivated by gallantry.

 

NAN reports that David Johnston, who is the British queen’s representative in Canada where she is head of state, joined the likes of former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama in breaching unspoken rules of behaviour when meeting the monarch.

 

He took Elizabeth by the elbow as she descended red-carpeted stairs outside London’s Canada House following an event to celebrate 150 years of Canadian independence.

 

“I’m certainly conscious of the protocol. I was just anxious to be sure that there was no stumbling on the steps.

 

“It’s a little bit awkward, that descent from Canada House to Trafalgar square and there was carpet that was a little slippy.

 

“So I thought perhaps it was appropriate to breach protocol just to be sure that there was no stumble,’’ Johnson told Canadian broadcaster CBC news.

“We stand ready to provide options if they are necessary,’’ Mattis said, pointing out that diplomacy with regards to North Korea had not failed.

 

Mattis quoted Gen. Vincent Brooks, the Commander of U.S. Forces in Korea, as saying America and South Korea have exercised extreme self-restraint in avoiding war.

 

He noted the shelling of South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island in 2010, the sinking of a South Korean ship earlier that year and other provocations at sea, on land and in cyberspace.

 

“Our self-restraint holds, and diplomatic efforts remain underway as we speak,’’ he said, adding, however, that diplomatic and economic efforts remained the tools of choice to convince North Korea to stop its nuclear and missile programmes.

 

“The President and Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, have been very clear that we are leading with diplomatic and economic efforts.

 

The defence secretary stressed that the effort against North Korea was diplomatically-led, adding the weapons of choice wee economic sanctions.

 

He, however, added that these would be buttressed by military capabilities.

 

He said the U.S. was working with allies to influence North Korea, while U.S. officials are also working with China – North Korea’s benefactor and the largest trading partner to place more pressure on North Korean leaders to stop the nuclear and missile programmes.
