Police uncover ritualists’ den in Ogun, arrest two

Operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad, Zone 2, Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have uncovered a ritualists’ den at Abule Ifa, Siun area of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Ogun State, arresting two suspected leaders of the syndicate.

Recovered inside the massive den were several fetish materials and assorted charms.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Zone, Abdulmajid Ali, yesterday, led a team of senior officers among who were Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Ahmed Iliyasu; Officer in Charge of Operations, Zone 2, DCP Suleiman Balarabe; Commander of the ZIS, CSP Gbenga Megbope, and Commander 16 Police Mobile Force, Chika, among others, to the den.

The den
The visit, as explained by the AIG, was to have an on-the-spot assessment of the den and also to design possible legal means of taking over the den, which he described as dangerous.

He stated that the discovery and subsequent arrest of the suspects were made following a tip-off.

He disclosed that the den was used by some fraudsters/ritualists to dupe people and perpetrate evil acts.

“The operatives, who had been on surveillance of the men of the underworld, were able to arrest the ring leaders of the syndicate identified as Taiwo Adeleke, 47, and Kayode Oseni, 52,” he added.

While commending the policemen for what he described as a job well done, he reiterated his readiness to set all machineries in motion, with a view to tackling crime and criminality within the zone.

He said: “Necessary legal steps will be taken to take over the structure and dislodge the syndicate,” adding that the suspects would be charged to court.

Senate Gives NDDC 7 Days To Tender Evidence Of Approval On 1,691 Contracts

ABUJA—THE Senate Committee on Public Accounts, yesterday, directed authorities of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, to submit all approval evidences for 1,691 contracts it awarded within seven days for verification.

The order was sequel to the failure of the commission to provide evidence of approval for the 1,691 contracts out of the entire 1,697 contracts awarded by the commission to registered contractors between 2014 and 2016.

The committee, led by Senator Andy Uba, PDP, Anambra South, subsequently directed the commission to within seven days, furnish it with evidence of approval of all the contracts and relevant certificates of no objection from the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP.

Failure of the commission to provide evidence of approval for the documented contracts came to the fore during vetting of its report by the committee, yesterday.

Apart from failure to provide approval evidence of contracts awarded, the commission was also queried by the committee for running 22 bank accounts before the implementation of Treasury Single Account, TSA, as against four approved for the commission by government.

The commission was also faulted by the committee for its huge tax debt profile of N28.7 billion against the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, and ordered it to start offsetting the debt forthwith.

The N28.7 billion tax debt profile of the commission as explained by its Acting Managing Director, Mrs Ibim Seminitari, arose from the N23 billion she met on ground and the N5.7 billion penalty slammed on it by FIRS, saying payment agreement had been entered into by the two agencies.

Failure of the commission to include income figures in its 2016 report on income and expenditure also put it under fire during the session, with a member of the committee, Bassey Akpan (PDP Akwa Ibom North East), accusing   the NDDC management of deliberate omission.

Though the NDDC Acting Managing Director, Mrs Ibim Seminitari informed the committee that a total of N23.5 billion had been given to the commission by the Federal Government in addition to N87.1 billion proceeds made from oil companies.

Responding, Seminitari said: “We will try as requested. There were errors in the past issues about award of contracts. We are trying to correct and improve on our standards.”

Kaduna have been finally approved for 215MW Power Plant by FFC

ABUJA—The Federal Executive Council, FEC, yesterday gave approval for the construction of a power plant in Kaduna which is expected to generate 215 megawatts of electricity.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, dropped the hints while briefing State House Correspondents alongside his colleagues in the Ministry of Information, Budget and National Planning at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The minister said the project, when completed would strengthen the national grid, adding that the project was awarded in 2009 to be completed in 2012 but was abandoned.

According to him, the present administration has decided to complete the project due to its importance to the economy.

He also stated that the project would include the construction of another sub-station to evacuate 40 megawatts of power from the Gurara hydro electric power plant, phase one to connect Kaduna.

Fashola said: “Council approved 215megawatt Kaduna power plant. The memo sought procurement and implementation defects and lack of budget support for the project which was started 2009 and should have been completed in 2012, but we are now in the position that we can complete this project by next year to add 215 megawatt of power to the national grid.

“In particular, we will dedicate some of the power to Kudan dam in Kaduna to support industrial complex there.

“The second project was the construction   of sub-station to evacuate 40 megawatt of power from the Gurara hydro electric power plant phase one to connect into Kaduna and to enable it interconnect to Mamdo transmission substation. Thus strengthening the

FG set to commence local production of vaccines

Abuja—The federal government is set to commence local production of vaccines as a deliberate effort to save the lives of more than seven million new born babies in the country.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, stated this while receiving the Nigerian Immunization Financing Task Force Team in his office in Abuja yesterday.

The Minister said the Ministry was determined to lead the way in the local production of vaccines, saying there was no justification for the nation to continue to spend on importation of what it could do.

He said: “We used to produce and export vaccines in the past,  Today, we are struggling to be self-sufficient, we need to go back to those things that helped us in the past.

‘’We don’t want to continually remain a poor nation, and rather being recipient of grants, we should be able to give grants to other countries.

“The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology will lead the way in making sure that vaccines are produced in the country to satisfy local needs and eventually for export to other African countries.”

Onu, who commended the team for being selfless in its efforts, urged it to work more in the common interest of the nation.

Earlier, leader of the team Dr. Benson Anyene, said the main goal of the team was to help Nigeria achieve Sustainable Immunization Financing by putting in place concrete efforts that would address gaps in the vaccines chain.

According to him, it has become obvious that if immediate actions are not taken quickly too, Nigeria may find itself in a position where it would no longer immunize children due to non-availability of vaccines.

He said the aim was also to get the federal government to increase the budget on immunization, establish an immunization fund and get the state to contribute to immunization procurement.

He noted that 25 per cent of Nigerian children died annually as a result of lack of immunization, as Nigeria had not produced any vaccine since 1991.

He stressed the need for policy documents and bankable business plan that would shape the sector and solicited the support of the ministry towards the realization of the project.

NMA makes case for National Health law

Jos—Medical doctors have called on the National Assembly to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently implement the National Health Act passed into law since 2014, saying Nigerians would have access to better healthcare delivery, if law was implemented.

The doctors, under the aegis of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, yesterday, during a peaceful protest to Plateau State House of Assembly in Jos, lamented that two years after the bill was passed, they were still awaiting its implementation.

Tabling their grievance before the Speaker, Peter Azi, NMA President, Dr. Mike Ogirima, through the state chapter Chairman, Dr. Meshak Daniel, said: “We wish to remind you that the National Health Act was signed into law in 2014, and as at today, there is no concrete structure on ground to start its implementation.

“NMA wishes to draw the attention of Mr. President that provisions in the Act are capable of transforming healthcare delivery in the country in line with the change agenda of the current regime.”

Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Christopher Edeh, gave the charge when he addressed newsmen in Keffi, Nasarawa State, to mark the commencement of the association’s week.

Responding, Director, Medical Health Care, Keffi Local Government, Dr. Nadawa Absalom, disclosed that Nasarawa State was putting healthcare services under one roof as well as pushing for the implementation of NHA Act for the benefits of the people.

Ondo polls: Jimoh Ibrahim remains PDP candidate – Oladipo

Abuja—The National Secretary of the Senator Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Professor Wale Oladipo, yesterday, insisted that Mr Jimoh Ibrahim remains the party’s candidate for the Ondo State governorship election.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Professor Oladipo said Ibrahim emerged as the party’s candidate in a duly conducted primaries.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission as an  umpire should be neutral and abide by the ruling of an Abuja High Court which said that only the candidate from  Sheriff faction of the party should be recognised.

JIMOH-IBRAHIM
He said Ondo State was very important to the party and it would do everything possible to keep it.

“We are determined to keep Ondo State. The NWC decided that for us to win that election, we need to give full backing to our candidate, Jimoh Ibrahim” he said.

But the position of the secretary was in sharp contrast to the position of Sheriff who said that he would abide by any decision arrived at by INEC on the candidate for the election.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Inuwa Bwala, said he will abide by the decision of INEC on the party’s candidate in the Ondo State governorship election.

Ibrahim and Mr Eyitayo Jegede, who emerged as candidate in a primary election organised by the National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi are laying claim to the PDP governorship ticket in the November 26 governorship election.

Oladipo said his group was not asking for any favour from INEC for Ibrahim in the governorship election, noting that all it was imploring the electoral body to do is to obey the order a Federal High Court in Abuja, which stated that the business man is the authentic candidate of the PDP in Ondo State. He said, “we know of no other candidate but Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim. A court of competent jurisdiction has said it, it has reiterated its position in another order which INEC itself has acknowledged receipt of. So, we are waiting to see the magic the electoral umpire is planning to perform.

“If they do otherwise, we will pursue the matter and ensure that the INEC staff involved is jailed for contempt of court” .

Speaking on the PDP crisis, Oladipo said both Sheriff and Makarfi are committed to resolving the leadership crisis in the party, but stated that the reconciliation must be done in accordance with the law.

“While we are preaching reconciliation, we will not allow anybody to trample on the constitution of the country. Jimoh Ibrahim’s candidature can not be sacrificed on the altar of reconciliation”, the PDP leader said.

Agric City ready in 4 years—Ogbeh

ABUJA—THE Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, yesterday, disclosed that bulldozers will be mobilised in a few days to the site for Agriculture City located at Kerkete Village in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to hasten the ongoing clearing and provision of physical infrastructure.
Ogbeh, who disclosed this during an inspection visit to the site of the project, said it would be completed in the next four years at the cost of over N30 billion.
He explained that the money would be sourced from support funds and levies on wheat importation, and not from the budget.
Ogbeh said: “We will conclude our negotiations with Aso Savings and Loans Plc in the next few days after this visit and we will move the bulldozers here”
Earlier, Group Head, Specialised Assets Group, ASO Savings and Loans Plc, Enesi Makoju, described the Agriculture City as an agribusiness hub.
